From a distance copywriting does not look very hard to do. If you’re an online marketer, you have probably seen a lot of sales letters. How hard can it be to write a few pages of text that gets people to buy what you are selling? If you don’t know this, copywriting is not the easiest thing to learn how to do well.

Most internet marketers decide to hire a professional copywriter to help them sell their wares. This can be a good idea if writing is not your strong suit. But if your budget can’t handle the outsourcing of this, then you really should at least learn some of the copywriting basics.

So when you write your copy, just do it like you were selling the item to yourself. If a particular selling technique annoys you, don’t use it yourself. Find products that are marketed in a way that makes you inclined to buy them, and copy some of those techniques. Remember that you are not only someone selling a product, but also someone who often buys products as well.

If your sales copy would not even persuade you to buy something, it needs work! Write your copy with the goal of persuading a customer who is very much like yourself. Once you’ve sold yourself, you will probably be able to sell to others too.

You can even add humor if it’s appropriate, but be careful that you don’t use too much. There have been some successful sales letters that used humor. Effective use of humor can be used to encourage people to relax at your site. It’s hard sometimes to predict what people will do, but if you can make them laugh a little it could make them feel a bit more comfortable and stay on your site.

Observe successful marketers in your niche. Learn from what they do, check out their websites, etc. Why do you like these pages and sites? What is it about the writing you read that stands out to you?

Pay attention to the reactions you are having as you read through their sales copy. When you feel tempted to buy the product ask yourself “what is it in this page that makes me want to buy this?” You can take all these lessons and use it in your own business.

The illusion is that things created by professionals only look easy from the outside. If you’ve never written copy and want to give it a shot, you’ll find out real fast that it’s real work. So just don’t worry about it, keep writing it and you’ll improve.
